Final Assessment
_ For
the final summative assessment, children will write a letter to The Virginia
Company of London from the perspective of one of the survivors of the “Starving
Time”. This letter should outline why the colony had such problems (the student
should be able to name the purposes of the venture, mainly to find things like
gold and make a profit and also should realize that several choices led to the
issues-choice to send unqualified colonists and not enough laborers (settlers starved due to lack of labor), good choice by John Smith to make all people work (which saved people), poor location choice (swampland filled with mosquitoes and bad water which caused disease), settlers chose to try to steal from Native Americans (and as a result, relations with Native Americans were even more tense and they were stuck in their camp during the Starving Time), Powhatan chose to put the colonists under siege and wouldn't trade with them (likely more Native Americans survived and many settlers died). The letter should also outline steps that should be taken to remedy
the situation and an explanation about how and why these actions will help
prevent future problems.
Students will be assessed on their knowledge of all of the choices that were made regarding Jamestown and the consequences of these choices. They will be assessed on their ideas that could have saved more colonists and ways to prevent things like happening in the future. They will be graded on their grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.
